Universal Mind Creates KODAK Moments Online and On the Go
Developing new ways to improve the KODAK Gallery customer experience
Challenge
It’s no surprise that KODAK Gallery is the leading consumer website for storing, sharing, and creating mementos with digital photos.
Yet the company identified a number of areas to improve the KODAK Gallery customer experience: simplifying its time-intensive photo book creation process, streamlining the greeting card shopping process, and increasing photo upload speeds.
KODAK also needed a mobile presence to extend the website’s brand to millions of users that photograph using their iPhone, Android and other mobile devices.
The company engaged Universal Mind. “We partner with Universal Mind on our important customer-facing apps,” says Peter Traeg, KODAK’s Lead Software Architect.
Process
Using its proven processes for user experience (UX) design, vision prototyping, and delivery management, Universal Mind quickly created two vision prototypes for different photo book workflows, then put the prototypes through user testing.
On the backend, Universal Mind created a flexible architecture that offered better performance, easier maintenance, and future development functionality. Not only did the new SMARTFIT photo book application automatically build custom pages in minutes, its architecture became the foundation for all of KODAK’s creative web applications.
The team built an elegant KODAK Gallery greeting card experience to help customers quickly choose card designs among thousands. They also improved the photo upload process. And supplied a new RIA codebase that supports Windows and Mac OSX systems.
Universal Mind also developed the best-in-class KODAK Gallery mobile app.
Results
In its first two weeks, the KODAK Gallery mobile app got 100,000 downloads and ranked eighth in the iPhone Photo/Video category. The app has fulfilled its business objective by increasing average shopping cart value.
