Wow, things have changed. Remember that radio-alarm clock you grew up with? A few years back, I stayed at my grandmother's house and there ended up being a question of what alarm clock we could find for our early departure the next day. The notion that I traveled with an alarm clock in my phone was met with great skepticism, and probably the sentiment of "why would I replace such a trusted and reliable object that had faithfully served mankind for years?"

Well, it's certainly not the only thing we are replacing these days. According to a survey by BIGresearch (via eMarketer.com) this summer, we are cleaning house and substituting our smartphones and tablets for GPS devices, personal planners, and ye olde landline phone as well as that digital camera.

Of course, change is not necessarily a bad thing - and knowing what IS changing gives us an important perspective as designers in understanding our audience's new day-to-day life experiences. In other words, that alarm clock app better be reliable, functional and easy to use - and maybe designed to reflect and respect it's physical predecessors as they become increasingly scarce.

Now if we could only get rid of the ones in hotel rooms that the previous occupant programmed for a 4am wake-up. That, my friends, would be real progress.
