Session: Greenthreading in Flex

One of the hallmarks of good RIAs is smooth interaction between the user and the application.  As RIA and the Flash Platform have grown and as applications become more data-intensive and more computation-intensive, developers often face several challenges in trying to increase the power of applications while maintaining the integrity of the user experience.  This topic discusses why sometimes Flash platform applications become unresponsive or crash given high processing demands and what developers can do to combat this.  In particular this session focuses on greenthreading as a technique for giving applications a level of concurrency so that they can accomplish intensive tasks while providing a high degree of interactivity to the user.

Session: Swiz Framework – Brutally simple micro-architecture for Rich Internet Application development with Adobe Flex

Swiz is a framework for Adobe Flex that aims to bring complete simplicity to RIA development. Swiz provides Inversion of Control, event handing, and simple life cycle for asynchronous remote methods. In contrast to other major frameworks for Flex, Swiz imposes no JEE patterns on your code, no repetitive folder layouts, and no boilerplate code on your development. Swiz represents best practices learned from the top RIA developers at some of the best consulting firms in the industry, enabling Swiz to be simple, lightweight, and extremely productive.

Session: It’s A Matter of Trust

People often talk about usability and learnability when discussing web and application development. Things have to be intuitive and familiar to increase conversions and trial… blah blah blah. All of this is really important. But what does it really boil down to? It’s all a matter of trust. Trust between the user and the developer. Between the user and the designer. Ultimately trust is allowing yourself to become vulnerable based on a positive expectation. So how do you build trust? And how do you avoid breaking it? It’s about the promises you make in subtle and obvious ways. In his session Carl will break down key steps to understanding, building and keeping trust with your users. More than that you’ll get to hear from real users what they think when you break that trust. Ouch!

Session: Flex 4 for Flex 3 Developers

Flex 4 offers a whole new approach to development. What do those of us who already know how to build apps in Flex 3 need to know to start being productive?  Did you know that Flex 4 offers a new component architecture?  Do you know about the new states paradigm?  How about how to use things like a ViewStack or DataGrid (both of which don’t have Flex 4 versions) in your Flex 4 application. Come on by and learn all this and more.

Session: Using Flash Builder 4’s Data-Centric Development with ColdFusion 9

Passing data from ColdFusion to Flex and back again has never been easier! Using Data-Centric Development, value objects can be automatically generated and transferred from server to client, and bound directly to your Flex interfaces. This session demonstrates the use of ColdFusion 9 ORM to generate value objects and gateways in CF, and how those can be translated into AS3 classes in Flex.
