Connecting with the Dallas Community at Big Design
Dallas is home to a thriving community of talented, creative professionals - user experience designers, digital marketers, content strategists, developers, and more. To strengthen community ties, the metroplex hosts a vast array of meetup groups and professional communities. While each group works together to connect individuals around common interests and serve as a platform for engagement, as busy professionals, we often miss each other and the opportunity to learn from one another.
Big Design Conference is a conference held each year in Dallas, for Dallas. It serves to unite the community, connect individuals, and encourage professionals to share their experiences and insights with others in the local community. This year’s event was held September 8-10, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Addison. For the second year in a row, Universal Mind was proud to serve as a Gold sponsor for the event! “The Big Design Conference is the must-attend event for designers in Dallas. It really brings people together and sheds light on the caliber of design talent in Dallas” said Megan Tom, UX Specialist for Universal Mind in Dallas.
The conference draws a variety of speakers, with topics ranging from practical insights learned through hands-on experience to established authors challenging the status quo. This year’s conference was no different. The talks were engaging, the exhibit halls were bustling, and conference attendees left feeling energized and inspired.
Universal Mind welcomed the opportunity to connect with the Big Design crowd by speaking at a couple of sessions. Shelley Staten and Matt Kortering gave an engaging relay style talk on “How UX Fits in a Scaled Agile Framework”. Together they explored how SAFe gets UX involved in the development process sooner, keeps UX involved later, and ensures the entire team is working towards one main goal. They also shared a set of best practices for adopting UX into SAFe. Part of the Corporate UX track, Jesslyn Beattie also spoke on the “Language of Leadership” a talk that explored how UX professionals can create better experiences through communication with other designers, leaders, and executives.
Universal Mind also hosted a Happy Hour on Friday evening for attendees of Big Design to celebrate the conclusion of the first day of the conference. Around 6 pm on Friday the courtyard patio at the Crowne Plaza was full of energy as conference participants were able to greet friends old and new, sharing what they learned throughout the day. A great way to round out the day, guests enjoyed fine conversation paired with complimentary drinks, snacks, and hand-crafted popsicles, a refreshing treat on a Texas late-summer evening.
Happen to miss this year’s gathering? Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for next year reconnect with the larger group, but in the meantime, we’d love to see you at some of the other local Dallas meetups we frequent such as CreativeMornings or Ladies that UX!
